EDEN PARK SURGERY

PRACTICE PROFILE

A mainly middle class suburban practice with 8000+  patients and 7 partners :-

Mary Bateman, Denise Carr, Jenny Donald, Albert Gramsma, Janet Neve, Raj Purwar, Sinead Tobin and 2 practice nurses :- Melanie Timms, Ann Towers

Raj [the trainer] & Mel work 5 days/week whilst the others work on 2, 3 or 4 days

We operate as a GMS practice offering the usual range of services plus a Family Planning Enhanced Service for our and neighbouring practices’ patients [Mary is a fully accredited family planning trainer]

Denise is a fully accredited GPSI dermatologist and runs clinics both within our practice and outside.

Our 2 health visitors and practice counsellors also operate from our premise

We work from a fairly spacious recently renovated/extended Victorian house with a large car park and a designated [though not-so-spacious!] registrars consulting room.

We try to ensure that our registrars quickly become a valued part of the fabric of our practice and we are able, after an appropriate induction period, to provide them with busy morning surgeries, with as many booked and/or unscheduled patients as they wish to see. Hitherto we have utilised the afternoons for joint surgeries with the trainer and/or other educational activities.

Although we view with some detachment the recent trends toward salaried partnerships, novel models of practice administration & “polyclinics” etc [partly because we believe that nearly all aspects of primary care can best be subsumed within, and delivered through, the “traditional” model] we are attempting to engage with developments such as PBC and extended hours, if only for economic reasons, but our over-arching philosophy is that the real levers driving the necessary processes of change in primary care are being operated from well above our heads [with the collusion of those who are rather more articulate/engaged/ ambitious/optimistic than any of us at this practice!

Furthermore ….no, that’s probably more than enough already -please feel free to edit it as you see fit [because I wouldn’t wish to put anyone off!]
