It is the responsibility of the GPR to make contact with the visiting trainer and arrange the dates. The GPR must also ensure that the visiting trainer has the appropriate documentation at least one week in advance.

Content of the 6 month Training Review

COTS

The GPR will submit a video of RECENT taped consultations to the visiting
trainer to enable a joint COTS to be undertaken.

The GPR and visiting trainer can agree in advance how many consultations
they wish to view before the meeting, but only ONE will be marked and
assessed during the meeting.

The visiting trainer will discuss the COTS with the GPR and give feedback
and advice.

The trainer and visiting trainer will agree the marking  and comments
before they are entered on the epf.

CBD

The GPR will choose 3 recent cases and submit a copy of the consultations
and relevant patient summaries (anonymised) to the visiting trainer.

As the GPR is 6 months into their training, it is expected that relatively
complex cases are submitted for discussion.

The visiting trainer will choose ONE case to discuss in a CBD observed by
the trainer.

The visiting trainer and trainer will agree the marking  and comments
before they are entered on the epf.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

Both the trainer and GPR are asked to prepare a personal statement (a joint
statement, if they prefer) for submission to the visiting trainer.

This is a reflective statement of how the  training is going - what is going
well, what could be better, any problems encountered and individual
strengths and weaknesses etc..

The visiting trainer is encouraged to write a short summary of the visit to
document the recommendations they make to progress the training.

                 Content of the GPR appraisal

The same visiting trainer will undertake the GPR appraisal at the end of the
GPR year.

This is a confidential process between the GPR and visiting trainer,
although the workshop encourages the GPR to share the outcome (the Form 4
and PDP) with their trainer.

This is an opportunity to reflect back on the GPR year but more importantly
its purpose is to prepare the GPR for their post - GPR career and for a
GP-peer appraisal the following year, as will be required by the PCT.

The documentation is largely the same as the current GP appraisal document
and will be updated regularly as the GP NHS appraisal documentation
develops.

The documentation is posted on both the Trainers workshop website as well at
the GPTP website.

The trainer is asked to write some advice for the GPR (see the paperwork)
and this is submitted at the same time as the appraisal documentation.

The GPR is strongly advised to discuss their PDP BEFORE the meeting with
their trainer so an appropriate PDP is agreed.

The visiting trainer will agree the PDP for the forthcoming year with the
GPR and complete a Form 4.
