Description of Post |
|
ST1 in Ortho-geriatrics. The post offers training in the acute management of elderly patients admitted with fractures including pre-operative assessment, post-operative follow-up and management, rehabilitation and discharge planning 1. Provide effective and appropriate care and management of patients with complex needs following hip fracture 2. Understand the physical, psychological and social changes that occur in older patients following a fracture 3. Develop the skills required in the acute management of older patients with complex medical problems a. Decision making regarding appropriateness of surgery and understanding of legal issues that may arise b. Communication skills with patient and relatives c. Optimizing patients for early surgery d. Management of post-operative complications e. Early discharge planning f. Withdrawing treatment when indicated 4. Develop the skills needed in the long term management of patients with falls, fracture and osteoporosis 5. Manage, supervise and monitor the rehabilitation of older patients with fractures through multi-disciplinary approach integrating physio, OT and social services. |
