Description of Post

This is a 4 month ST2 post in geriatric medicine with a focus on the Stroke unit.  The post holder will be part of an geriatric medicine team and will take part in the Medical on-call rota.  The post offers training in the acute management of elderly patients but also of some general medical patients admitted when on-call.  When not on-call the main responsibilities will be for the management of acute strokes and their rehabilitation.

The post is funded by the Deanery and the appropriate pay scale is applied.

 

Special features relating to Rota

The Rota is fixed and set from the onset of the post and annual leave is allocated from the beginning of the post.  Flexibility exists as long as ST doctors can manage internal swaps.

 

Learning opportunities (other than informally during clinical work)

Developing the knowledge and skill required in the management of illness in elderly patients.  Understanding the complex nature of illness in elderly patients.

Learning how to: make appropriate decisions about admission and discharge, communicate with patients and relatives, optimize patient care attending to matters such as poly-pharmacy and withdrawing treatment when and where appropriate.

Learning the principles around management of Stroke Disease, including risk factors. Developing an understanding of the principles of Rehabilitation.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Learn presentation skills.

Develop teach skill.
