Historically Bromley is a very popular place to do GP training. We try to make your training as enjoyable as possible and we value your engagement and contributions in helping the programme to run smoothly and have fun together.

On Wednesday afternoons from 2 – 5 pm all GP Registrars in Bromley meet with GPTP ST 1 and 2 doctors at the Princess Royal University Hospital Education Centre.  Sessions are facilitated by the GPTP Programme Directors who are available to discuss any concerns you may have privately.

The Programme is prepared partly by the GPTP Programme Directors and partly by the GPRs and ST doctors to meet their particular needs.  The peer support provides great camaraderie and sessions may include consultation video reviews, critical reading of journal articles, group as problem solving exercises and excursions to places such as the National Portrait gallery.  Two to three time a year we join up with other local GPTPs to have a joint session, these are often for a whole day.

Twice a year the GPRs have a residential (overnight) study day to get to know each other and explore topical issues in depth eg choosing a practice, ethical issues etc.  The SHO’s also have a biannual away day in a pleasant environment with pre-booked study leave.  This helps the SHO maintain their General Practice orientation and helps to prepare them for the GPR year.

Other activities have included a joint awayday with all the GP Trainers including gentle OSCEs for GPRs and ‘university challenge’ by GPRs for the trainers.  We have had outings to consider medical humanities and in June 2005 visited our French opposite numbers in Lille.

The GPTP has also visited the Royal Society of Medicine and St Christopher’s Hospice. There are two evening meals a year with the trainers, one celebrating Christmas at the end of the year and the other to present the prizes for the annual GPTP audit competition.

Teaching and Learning                                                                                                   Bromley encourages an adult learning style in all participants and it is expected that you will take responsibility for your own learning.  We view the GPR year(ST3) as a continuum of the ST1 and 2 years culminating in the nMRCGP.  You will be well supported both by your Trainer as well as the Programme Directors.   Educational Supervision will be provided by the Programme Directors who will be a GP.

The ST1 and 2 doctors will meet with their Educational Supervisor every 4 - 6 months to review their e-portfolio. These meetings act as formative appraisals and allow you to raise any issues of concern, and help you to look carefully at your personal professional development.
