'analysis of marking of COT on e portfolio'

Addington Palace

16 September 2009

Present: Jon, Kelly, Prad, Metale, Bart, Sachin, Ed, Alka, Sara, Krishna, Ban, Stuart, James, Hasib, Pippa, Nikki, Stella, Jackie, Raj, Stefan, Cath, Tash

All present (especially trainees!) valued seeing COT’s from trainees at different stages in their training- helpful for bench marking.

Trainers scores are generally lower than what trainees might think = wake up call for trainees!

The trainer’s scores were generally ‘congruent’.

‘Subcompetent’ scores are based on not yet reaching GP completion standard.  Can be a shock if registrar always marked competent in secondary care!

Varying tutorial styles -> trainee self rating is one approach to the assessment

Use of Insufficient evidence tick box discussion:

‘Not in that consultation’ vs ‘missed’ in that consultation?

Consensus (with input from Tash, who sits on panel) is that is it ‘not in the consultation’.  If was missed/omitted this should be scored as needed development.

Competent -> excellent transition would be based on either (1) very challenging case done well or (2) case handled with distinction!

Disparity in scoring can be due to varying focus on different areas/aspects of consultation.

Choice of cases – formative learning vs. assessment – helpful to have a new patient for assessments.  Video helps with formative process- opportunity to ‘go back over’ learning points.

Trainee input into marking was discussed- frowned upon by college but group consensus was no harm in discussing the mark provided trainer is not unduly influenced to change their mind without good reason!

Patient input into marking??  One for the future!
